Day 4: West Hook Farm Camping - Marloes Sands
May 31, 2023
I take the morning very slowly. Today I want to spend the day on a nearby beach. Unfortunately, my neck, upper back and head hurt like hell today. Normally this goes away during the day, so at some point I pack my bags and drive to the parking lot for the beach. There are two. One of them is in a farmer's meadow and if you drive to the end, you have to walk several hundred meters less. Luckily, it's still early in the day and so there's only one other car parked in the lot. I take my bags and my guitar and carry everything downstairs. Later, I regret having so much with me. Even now my neck hurts even more from the luggage. It's a bit chilly this morning, which I'm sure is due to the cloudy sky. As the tide is still low, I walk between the craggy boulders and look for a quiet spot, which is below the high tide mark. I notice that the water is already starting to rise again and I realize that I can stay here for another 3 hours at most and bring my luggage back to a dry spot further ahead over the rocks without any major problems. Anyway - for now I stay here. I lie down, rest and play a bit of guitar and sing. Maybe a few people are listening, but I don't know and I don't really care.
At some point, it's time to move. I go back to the front, back to the stairs I used to get to the beach. It's very rocky there, but I don't care. I lie down and as time goes by, the sun comes out. However, some tourists also flock to the beach. Nevertheless, I still enjoy watching them. Some even go into the water without a wetsuit. I have mine with me, but I want to try it without. I had read beforehand that the water was just over 10 degrees. I'm only in the water for a very short time and leave almost immediately. It's far too cold for me and I can't explain how some of the children can stand it for an estimated 30 minutes in this cold water. For the rest of the day, I just sunbathe, listen to an audio book and finish reading my thriller.
I also write in my travel diary. As the sky slowly turns golden, I pick up my things and leave. By now, my headache has also become very bad and all I can think about is magnesium and ibuprofen. A delicious cocktail that I can hardly wait to sip. And that's what I do as soon as I get to the bus. Then I pack everything up and drive the few minutes back to the campsite. I am relieved to see that the pain is slowly getting better. After a warm shower and something to eat, I finally feel better and can enjoy the sunset today with some music.
